Whether any open depends entirely on how quickly the glacier cools. Operators do not publish fixed opening dates because they cannot — a cave is only offered once guides have judged it safe. If a blue cave tour appears for an October date, it is real; if none does, that is why.
October is a genuinely good time for glacier hiking, and slightly underrated. The summer crowds are gone, the ice is firming up again, and the low autumn sun does striking things to blue ice in the middle of the day.
For anyone visiting this month who wanted a cave, the crevasse and blue-ice maze routes on Falljökull are the closest substitute. Walking between walls of blue ice is not the same as standing inside a chamber, but it delivers much of the same feeling and it does not depend on the season.
October has the best balance of darkness and access of any autumn month. Nights are long enough for a proper aurora window, there is still around ten hours of daylight mid-month for touring, and the roads have not yet reached winter conditions.
That said, the weather turns properly this month. Wind and rain increase, the first serious snow arrives on high ground, and South Coast conditions can change fast. Tours here are all short-transfer or year-round formats, so disruption is less likely than in deep winter.
If a natural blue cave is essential, the safest approach is to shift the trip to November, when the season reliably starts. If the dates are fixed, book a year-round cave now and watch for a late-October blue cave listing as a bonus.
